Using Agile/Scrum methodologies, Competa IT has been able to establish a successful implementation of the partnerships model in Europe.

However, in order to gain a foothold on the African market, Competa IT had to strengthen its position by collaborating with DewCIS Solutions Ltd, a Kenya’s leading providers of Information Technology (IT) solutions and services. By partnering with DewCIS, CodePamoja could be operated properly and according to international standards of software engineering.

Opportunity

The market of software development in African countries is growing fast. A lot of African companies are implementing software and technologies into their businesses, causing a strain in software development industry. The demand for software developers has been seen to increase by 40 percent.

Kenya is among the top five African countries that have seen the highest increase of software development jobs. However, Kenyan software development professionals lack the experience necessary to land jobs in large corporations and acquire major contracts. In general, Kenyan graduates are great coders, but they don’t have hands-on experience in project management and collaboration.

As a result of this, the gap between graduates and proficient professionals is too big, creating software developers who are ‘intermediate’, to be under-skilled in developing robust applications as well as inexperienced with regard to project management and collaborative software development.

Solution

Kenyan software developers needed practical training in order to gain access and opportunities to the (global) market. Competa IT called upon the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation since they had commissioned a development partnership programme called develoPPP.de.

DeveloPPP.de made it possible for Competa IT to set up the CodePamoja training programme. Participants of the programme learned modern methods of handling software development projects, with Agile management methods such as Scrum.

The added value of Competa IT was obvious: developers are now able to structure their software development project quicker and easier, by breaking up extensive tasks into smaller ones – ensuring ‘piece by piece’ progress.

Graduate interns were skilled with facilitating their transition to being senior software engineers. Additionally, Competa IT and DewCIS provided a platform to offer Kenyan individuals a position to work alongside experienced software developers in the Netherlands.
